Open Question: Is Underground the new Mainstream?

The reasons why musicians went mainstream were because of better pay, more fans, and because they just wanted the limelight. The reasons why fans listened to mainstream were because of better music, better music quality, and better stars. Now, with more money being made on the underground level, is mainstream hiphop almost irrelevant?? Underground artists can make around 3 mill a CD(ex. Immortal Technique) if not more, if promoted rite. You have more stars undergroud (Blu, Immortal, Del, I still consider Pappoose underground, and Atmosphere) now than ever before. Also, you can make a studio sounding track with 150 dollar gear. Lastly, the selection of music is better. With that said, is underground the new mainstream, in terms of where people go looking for music at?? Hell, you could even consider Soulja Boy an underground success. Crank dat was actually an underground hit. With that said, will big business start to exploit the underground like they exploited the mainstream?
