Open Question: Did you know that most waiters make less than 1/3 of the minimum wage from their employers?

The way it works is that the company assumes that because you get tips that will bump you up above minimum wage. If it doesn't then the company has to forfeit more money to the employee in order to make them earn minimum wage. This almost never happens or else the waiter is doing a poor job. Do you feel like more of a horrible person now knowing this and not tipping well? You should. As a waiter I make $2.10 an hour at a very nice restaurant. We also have tip share where I work so when I get no tip I actually LOSE money because I have to cough up money from my should-be tip amount for runners, bussers, and other employees. So unless the server has poured gravy in your lap on purpose and made a pass at your wife, you should always leave some kind of tip. Revenge doesn’t feel all that good in the long run, you’ll feel much better if you communicate clearly why you’re unhappy, and you may improve the restaurant.
