Open Question: Do your parents have a legal obligation to support you financially until you are 18?

What is the extent of responsibility that a parent has financial towards a minor when they are his/hers legal guardian. I am in a very complicated situation. I ceased living at home against my will at the age of 16, because of severe family problems. I was forced out on to the street with nothing and no one to support me. I was forced to move in with friends and recieve child welfare, and get a job to support many other costs. I am now 17, about to turn 18, and have not lived at home or talked to my mom for almost two years now (her choice not mine). I am considering litigation against my mother and step father, but was wondering what the extent of their obligation is. They are in no way poor (six figure salaries) and there conduct could best be described as especially egregious, considering I am an honors student with good character. Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated.
