Open Question: How do Oil Futures affect gas prices at the pump immediately?

I understand that oil's future contract is a financial contract that allows you to lock in today a price at which you'll buy or sell oil in the future. What I don't understand is how this affects immediate gas prices at the pump. If the contract is to lock in a rate for a point in the future, why would the cost be passed down to the consumer almost immediately?
